The study of job related stress among hospital nurse.

Abstract
Previous research has shown that job?related stress associated with high levels of demand placed on the work, especially in situations where influence is low.
This study examined job related stress among nurse workig on acute unit and chronic unit. A sample of 131 nurse from 10 unit in six hospitals were surveyed.
A total of 131 nurse were invited to a nurse had to between 21 and 55 years old, emploed in the present position for at least 6 month and willing to participate. Of 150 distributed questionnaire, 145(9%) were returned to the investigators : 62 from acute nurses, 69 from chronic nurses.
Data was collected from 10 March to 10 April, 1995 by questionaire.
The instrement for this study was based on 7 kind of domain of stress by Gray?Toft and Anderson919810 and repaired by reseacher.
The NSS is a 31 item, 4?point Likert Scale with score ranging from ¢¥Never¢¥(1) to ¢¥very frequently¢¥(4), while measures frequency of job related stress in seven domain : Work to overload, Death and Dying, Inadequate preparation, Lark of staff support, Uncertainly concerning treatment, Conflict with Physicians, Conflict with other nurses, Chronbach alpha reliability for total scale is 0.8947.
Demographic data were odtained on each subject through a demographic information form and included age, marital status religion, education, the days of patient¢¥s admission and the type of patient. As a group, the nurse were predominately that : 70% were less than 30 years of age and 30% 30-55 years od age. Most nurses in this study were not married(71.8%) and 69.1% were graduate collage.
Descriptive statistics(frequency and percentage) were calculated on each demographic variable by group and the total sample.
Means and standard deviation were computed on score, t?test and Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) was employed to determine if ther were siginificant defferences among groups on the total and subscale score.
The result are as follows.
It is no significant differences among the groups of nurses on the overall frequency of job related stress. Two geoups did demonstrate a significant differnce in one of the seven subscale; Lack of staff support (t= -3.21, p=0.002).
Mean, standard deviation revealed that chronic unit nurses had significantly higher stress score than acute unit nurses. Work overload, Death and Dying, Indequate of prepatation, Lack of staff support were the chronic unit nurses had higher s tress score than acute unit nurses than the chronic unit nurses.
This finding may be useful to nurse managers and educators in several ways.
1. Acute unit and Chronic unit nurses are not unique in terms of overall frequncy of job related stress and infact may experience stressors from the same sources. Therfore it is recomanded that stress managemant progrmmes related to these arears br designed for all nurses. And such programmes should be implemented and evaluated to determine if the stress factors were deceased in these nurse.
2. Stress manegernent programmes should be flexible enough to be individualized. The nurse manage should determine the types of nursing to better indentifying the most appropriate intervention.
3. Nursing and hospital administrations dhould be aware of aspects of the work enviromental which result in stress.
